چکیده
Introduction Osteoarthritis (OA) is the commonest joint disease, with many patients having persistent disability due to pain and stiffness. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory therapy is limited by side effects and not all patients are adequately controlled with lifestyle changes. Reports of the therapeutic and analgesic effects of acupuncture in OA have stimulated interest in acupuncture as complementary or even as an alternative to Western orthodox medicine. Many patients suffering from OA of the knee, who have not been helped by one or more Western therapy regimes, find relief from alternative medical approaches, including acupuncture. A survey in 1996 showed that more than 50% of all cases treated by acupuncturists in the UK had OA. It has been suggested that acupuncture, with its good safety record, can be used to manage OA in patients for whom conventional Western treatments are inadequate or contraindicated. Controlled trials on the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment have yielded inconsistent results, which may be due to a variety of technical reasons. A systematic review by Ezzo et al concluded that there is limited evidence that acupuncture is more effective than no treatment for chronic pain and inconclusive evidence that Emad Tukmachi acupuncturist

[email protected] The SAR symposium has become a regular feature of the acupuncture research calendar. It started with a small group of people who longed for an open arena in which to discuss acupuncture research without any professional tensions or barriers, and celebrated its tenth anniversary this year. It is a worthy aim to establish a successful society in this under-funded field, and...
متن کاملThe cannabinoid receptors are required for ultraviolet-induced inflammation and skin cancer development.
Solar UV irradiation is an important carcinogen that leads to the development of skin cancer, which is the most common human cancer. However, the receptors that mediate UV-induced skin carcinogenesis have not yet been unequivocally identified. Here we showed that UV irradiation directly activates cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2 (CB1/2). Notably, our data indicated that the absence of the CB1/2 re...
متن کاملMultiple Molecular Mechanisms Cause Reproductive Isolation between Three Yeast Species
Nuclear-mitochondrial conflict (cytonuclear incompatibility) is a specific form of Dobzhansky-Muller incompatibility previously shown to cause reproductive isolation in two yeast species. Here, we identified two new incompatible genes, MRS1 and AIM22, through a systematic study of F2 hybrid sterility caused by cytonuclear incompatibility in three closely related Saccharomyces species (S. cerevi...
متن کاملErk1/2 inhibit synaptic vesicle exocytosis through L-type calcium channels.
L-type calcium channels play only a minor role in basal neurotransmitter release in brain neurons but contribute significantly after induction of plasticity. Very little is known about mechanisms that enable L-type calcium channel participation in neurotransmitter release. Here, using mouse primary cortical neurons, we found that inhibition of Erk1/2 (extracellular signal-regulated kinases 1 an...
